BLOG BY GABRIEL (5TH GRADE STUDENT)

Hi! I’m Gabe. The blog this week is about the MLB PLAYOFFS 2013!

Lets start with the wild card teams. If you don’t know what that is, it’s okay. I was just about to tell you. So there is three divisions, the west, the central, and the east. In the playoffs, there are eight teams that qualify. There are two leagues. there’s the American League and the National League. Because there are only three divisions and two leagues and three teams that qualify from each league, there has to be a fourth team to face one of the leaders of a division. The wild card is the team with the best record that is in 2nd place in a division. The team that has the best record and is in 2nd place that has a better record than any other 2nd place team is the wild card winner. From the National league, the Pittsburgh Pirates won the wild card. And from the American League, the Tampa Bay Rays won the wild card.

So the Rays went on to Face the heavily favored Boston Red Sox, and the Pirates went on to face the St. Louis Cardinals. The heavily favored Los Angeles Dodgers faced the Atlanta Braves, and the Detroit Tigers faced the Oakland Athletics in the AL and NL division series. The Red Sox beat the Rays to advance to the AL championship series, and the Tigers beat the A’s to move to the ALCS. The Dodgers beat the Braves to go to the NLCS, and the Card’s beat the Pirates to go to the NLCS.

The Red Sox knocked out the Tigers to advance to the World Series, and the Card’s knocked out the Dodgers to also advance to the World Series.

So now it’s just two teams facing each other for glory. The Red Sox and the Cardinals. So turn on your TV and watch some of the World Series!

Please leave in the comments who you think is going to win the World Series!

Day of the Dead

By: Amel

Happy Dia De Los Muertos, or in other words Day of the Dead. Day of the Dead is a special celebration, where it is believe that spirits from the dead come back to see their loved ones. This holiday  has been celebrated since the pre-columbian times. The Aztecs, Mayans, Purepechas, and the Totonacs originally celebrated it in the mid-summer. Now it is celebrated on the 1st and 2nd of November.

On the Day of the Dead people celebrate by going to their dead loved ones’ graves and decorating them with things the deceased liked, like their favorite foods, toys, and their belongings. Sometimes they also put pictures, flowers, sugar skulls, candles, and paper mache skeletons on the graves.

The children 13  and younger who have died are remembered on the 1st of November, Dia de los Angelitos (Day of the little Angels). Adults are remembered on the second day of November.

So to celebrate the Day of the Dead 4th, 5th, and 6th graders will be going to Olvera Street for a day. We’ll do an activity and learn a little about what people do and wear on the celebration.

The Changes to our School

During the summer, one of the student’s mom’s decided to paint the school. With approval from our principle and the temple, we started. A lot of kids and parents helped with everything. We first painted a whole new coat of white on the whole school. It took awhile, but finally we were ready to add some color. Magenta, Lime green, Aqua, were added to make the school more colorful. Everyone helped, and it was really fun.

Then, the teachers  made a few changes to the classrooms. We got new rugs, more books for Kendall and Bob’s classroom, more supplies, a new basketball hoop, hooks for our backpacks and lunchboxes , and over time, we got 7 new computers!

I think the changes that happened to our school are really cool, and I’m really happy about it.

Welcome back everyone! Monday, September 9th is our first day of school at GPME. The 5th and 6th graders will have a relatively light homework week, there will be spelling, two compositions and an autobiography project. I'm planning on spending this week assessing and getting a good grasp on where everyone is and how much homework is realistic for each student.

Also, I do have high expectations for this autobiography project! The assignment will go home on Monday and it is due Friday. It should be a really fun and creative project!

It is important to be aware of a policy change with my class. I am now asking parents to sign the front of each week's homework packet. This will help me encourage the students to be accountable for their own work and it will hopefully help you be on the same page with your student so you know what is going on in school. I will do my best to keep this blog updated with important dates and soon, I want the students to take over the blog posts so you can have a student's perspective on what is going on in class!

The end is here! There are only three days left in the year, and just so everyone knows I won't be teaching at GPME this summer. I will be around though, doing some tutoring on-campus and I will DEFINITELY be back in the fall! Keep checking in
